INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS)

This course is designed to assess the language ability of the candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of communication. IELTS is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge, British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. It covers the four language skills - listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS is recognised by universities and employers in many countries and by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies.

IELTS is available in two formats - Academic and General Training. The Academic module assesses whether a candidate is ready to study or train in the medium of English at an undergraduate or post graduate level. The General Training module emphasises the basic survival skills in a broad social and educational context. General Training is suitable for candidates who are going to English speaking countries to complete their secondary education, to undertake work experience and training programmes not at degree level, or for immigration purposes to Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

The course is in five modules. The first deals with remedial grammer and the second with conversational strategies. The third module gives the student samples of speech sounds, word accent and intonation. The forth module deals with communication strategies in different life situations and mock inteviews.

This need based academic programme is a blessing in disguise for mursing students who do not have english in their syllabus and are ensured of a valid certificate of language study that supports their employment opprtunities.

SPOKEN ENGLISH

The purpose of this course is to learn to speak well, using expressions with confidence and ease. Too much emphasis has been placed on the discipline of learning grammatical rules alone and the student is graded on his capacity to memorise them. Writing and speaking assert fundamental convictions of both feeling and belief. Lack of natural expression and confidence, results in an inferiority complex, and this impedes expression. Everybody has something to say if he can only be encouraged to express himself.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS The purpose is to develop students' ability to use English accurately, appropriately and fluently both for face to face and telephonic communication in academic, social and work situations. The course is divided into three parts. The first part familiarises the students with the sounds of English and their symbols and introduces them to word stress, sentence stress and intonation. An attempt is also made to neutralise students' accent by drawing their attention to common errors in English due to the influence of the mother tongue. The second part focuses on the basics of oral communication and development of the ability to use English for performing some of the most common communicative functions in academic, social and work situations. The third part helps students to understand the telephone as a mode of communication and prepares them to handle telephone calls besides using it for basic communicative functions such as requesting and asking for and giving information. Listening and speaking activities are combined in order to develop fluent communication using drills, role play, simulations and informing group activities.
